Off To School They Went

The Bogue School 1844-1920...still standing

Located on Pleasant Valley Road, near the intersection of Deane Road, the Bogue School was in use from 1844-1920 and had a large attendance. In 1845, 76 students attended–boys for 3 months during the winter and girls for 3 months in the summer. This was a “fractional school” as children from nearby Cambridge attended as well as Underhill students. The building was used for various community functions, including a dancing school in the late 1920s. Their Saturday night dances had rules–no drinking (!) and girls were not allowed away from the building alone. (Courtesy of https://underhillhistorical

We know the Flynn (who lived at SQB in the 1870s,80s and 90s), Corbet (cellarhole near the iron gate), Quinn (cellarhole near the house) and Shanley children all schooled here. Imagine the kids traipsing down Deane Road to school, collecting children at each house on the way down. Anyone wonder why the boys schooled in the winter and not the height of farming season?
